Charity Spotlight: Food for the Hungry (FH)

Charitable Giving

Well the election is over and my guy didn’t win. It’s easy to think (especially when you lose) that we have so many problems here in America. In fact, there’s a whole mini-blog devoted to our problems: First World Problems.

But for many people, their big problem every day is finding food. Food for the Hungry (FH) is about solving that problem for people around the world.

What They Do

Food for the Hungry (FH) is a Christian organization serving the poor globally since 1971. We reflect the love of Christ in short-term emergency relief and long-term work to end world hunger.

Their About Us page illustrates what they do in four main ways: They help children, while keeping a Christ-centered focus; innovating practices to help people help themselves while cherishing the individual cultures.

Why I like them

This organization is awesome. In fact, if I made my own non-profit organization, I’d probably create it like this – if I was smart enough to think it up. They focus on teaching the poor, raising them out of poverty by practical education. Their cascade model of teaching 15 people who then each teach 10 more people allows a small staff to reach thousands of people.

Not only that, they also offer child sponsorship which can be an amazing way for those who give to connect to the people they are giving to. And they have a gift catalog where you can give specific gifts including animals, mosquito nets, school supplies, and more.

Financials

Out of the 10 charities I’ve given to this year, Food for the Hungry has seriously the BEST financials page I’ve seen. It’s clear, succinct, and organized. They are a part of Charity Navigator, Intelligent Philanthropy, and the ECFA. They spend 81% on programs, 11% on raising funds, and 8% administrative.

The only thing I actually worry about is that 54% of their funds come from the US government. I wish we could lower the taxes and just donate directly to charities – more money would get to the charity, and thus to the people who need it!

Giving to Food for the Hungry

The giving page for FH is incredibly simple. They did a great job on the User Interface. With hints and a helpful layout, giving has never been easier.

So what are you waiting for? Give now!
